Clinical Analysis of Sudden Deafness

Abstract
Sudden deafness is defined as an abrupt onset of sensorineural hearing loss which develops over a period of a few days without definite cause. The etiopathogenesis has not been fully determined. To evaluate the clinical characteristics and
prognostic
factors, we analyzed 98 patients(100 ears) of sudden deafness admitted at Asan Medical Center from August 1989 to January 1993. All patient were treated with bad rest, low salt diet, vasodilator and steroid. The recovery rate was evaluated with
audiologic results of 2 weeks after treatment.
1) The incidence was most common in the 4th and 5th decades.
2) The recovery rate was 61.0% in total cases and highest in 3rd decades(85.7%).
3) Patients treated within 1 week after onset of hearing loss showed better recovery rate(68.2%) than those treated 1 week or later(20.0%).
4) The prognosis was poorer in patients with vertigo than without vertigo.
